I’d be the first to tell you that I love my Kindle for its convenience. However, children’s picture books are sacred to me, because of the joy I got when I read books with my children, and now with my grandchildren. E-books for kids are more like video games than a reading experience, so there has to be a balance between print books and digital.
At the Children’s Publishing Conference held last week, many speakers agreed. Children’s book author and illustrator John Rocco said, “A physical picture book is an opportunity for a parent and child to make a connection”
Several speakers, including Roger Sutton, editor-in-chief of the Horn Book, and author/illustrator Peter Brown, talked about the emotional value of print books. Sutton said, ”People treasure the physical experience of reading with a child…. It keeps picture books safe.”
I love that these experts have hope for the future of picture books. Our children need and deserve them!
